First goal for Rosenberg in 1-5 win at HHC Hardenberg

Markus Rosenberg, Ajax's new Swedish striker, has scored his first goal in a friendly for the Amsterdam club. A thru-pass sent the speedy Swede on his way to Marc Doornbos, goalkeeper of Hoofdklasse amateur outfit HHC Hardenberg, and clinically tapped the ball past the goalie. A nice moment for Rosenberg, but it says a lot that his goal made it 1-2 to Ajax in the 57th minute of the game at atmospheric Sportpark De Boshoek. Ajax were everything but impressive once again and were 1-0 down at half-time. The Amsterdammers turned the game around in the second half and made the scoreline look acceptable in the dying minutes: 1-5.

The 'big man' in the first half did not wear a red and white, but an orange and black jersey. His name: Stefan Buitenhuis. He surprised Hans Vonk (who had his first pre-season appearance after an injury) with a smart free kick from the left, which curled into the net at the near post: 1-0 (8'). What a week it was for Buitenhuis... On Monday he also played against Ajax (it was his last game for WHC from Wezep) and also scored from a free kick. Three days later, in his first game for his new club, he did the same thing again. "Kind of funny," Buitenhuis said. "In twenty years' time I will put on the DVD and show my kids my two goals against Ajax, for two different clubs in one week..."

For Ajax Buitenhuis' goal was not-so-funny. The Amsterdammers conceded four goals in four games against amateur opposition, failed to put a really big score on the score-board so far and - most importantly - have trouble playing fluent football. HHC easily held on to their 1-0 lead in the first half. The half-time score of 1-0 was not at all undeserved.

Five minutes into the second half (Danny Blind replaced six players; Julien Escudé and Rasmus Lindgren were rested today) the Hardenberg crowd said goodbye to goalkeeper Rob Kaptein (38), after twenty years of service. Kaptein probably never expected to play his last game against Ajax and keep a clean sheet for 50 minutes.

After the arrival of the new goalkeeper, Marc Doornbos, the party was over for the hosts, who were visibly getting tired. A foul on Markus Rosenberg in the penalty area allowed Tomás Galásek to equalize from the spot. A few minutes later an almost identical situation was converted by Rosenberg himself. Daniël de Ridder, Nigel de Jong and Nicolae Mitea (remarkably productive in pre-season!) lifted the score to 1-5 in the latter fifteen minutes of the game. Not too much of a big score compared to previous pre-season campaigns, but one must bear in mind that Ajax only play Hoofdklasse ('Top Class') amateur sides this year - and not a single opponent from lower non-league divisions.

One more day of training (Friday) in De Lutte lies ahead. Ajax will drive back to Amsterdam on Saturday morning and immediately move on to the town of Rijnsburg for one last friendly against amateur opposition. After the HHC match coach Danny Blind was not satisfied with his team's performance, but very satisfied with the week as a whole: "The facilities, the organization, the pitches, it was all very good."
