McDonald to coach Ajax Cape Town; Vink wants player contract
10 April: Scotsman, Rob McDonald, has signed a contract as
the new head coach of Ajax' South-African satellite club, Ajax
Cape Town. McDonald started the season coaching De Graafschap,
but was fired earlier this year, due to the disappointing
results of the Eredivisie's current number 15.
McDonald was contracted on technical director Leo
Beenhakker's initiative. He signed a contract for one season.
An option to extend the contract during the season was
included.
It is remarkable that former Ajax player, Marciano Vink,
will join McDonald to South-Africa. After having won the UEFA
Cup with Ajax in 1992, Vink left for an unlucky adventure at
Genoa in Italy's Serie A. After being relegated with that club,
he signed with PSV. Over there he sustained a career
threatening knee injury. Since 1997, however, Vink has been
training at Dutch amateur side Lelystad and claims to be fit
for professional football.
Vink (30) was a guest in this Monday's edition of
*Godenzonen* on AT5 television. "Dutch clubs seem to have
forgotten about me", he said. "They think the Vink story is
over. But my knee has fully recovered. I am sure I can be ready
for professional football after one month of professional
training." (MP)
