Ajax Cape Town advances to second round of CAF Cup
14 April: Ajax Cape Town of South Africa has advanced to the
second round of the African Football Confederation Cup in their
first appearance in the tournament, after drawing 1-1 with
Kampala City Council of Uganda on Saturday. The tournament is
for national league runners-up.
After assuming the lead with a 2-0 home victory last
weekend, the young Ajax team played a strong game to hold their
more experienced opponents to a draw. The accomplishment was
more noteworthy for the fact that Ajax had arrived in the
Ugandan capital just a few hours before kickoff.
Ajax, partly owned by Ajax Amsterdam, believed the game was
on Sunday and accused City Council officials of 'dirty tricks'
when they arrived.
Shaun Permall punished careless defending to put the South
Africans ahead after 21 minutes at Mandela Stadium, and Moses
Byekwaso leveled four minutes into the second half.
Ajax will next face Katsina United of Nigeria in the second
round in May. Katsina received a free pass through the
first-round when Rwandan club Simba withdrew from the
competition. (JM)
