Yugoslavijan Ajax legend Velibor Vasovic dies at 63
04 March: Velibor Vasovic, the captain of the legendary Ajax
team that won the club's first European Champions Cup in 1971,
died of a heart-attack on Monday. He was 63 years old.
'Vasco', as his fans and team-mates knew him, is a true Ajax
legend. Born on October 03, 1939, he started his professional
football career at Partizan Belgrade, in his fatherland,
Yugoslavija. He also played for Partizan's arch-enemy, Red Star
Belgrade, before joining the Ajax team that was to become the
'Golden Ajax' of the 1970s. He played his first game for Ajax
in December 1966. His last game was on 06 June, 1971. He also
played numerous games for the Yugoslavijan national team.
The highlight of Vasovic's career was the European Champions
Cup final of 1971, in London's Wembley Stadium. With Vasovic as
their captain, Ajax won the first European trophy in club
history, beating Greek champions Panathinaikos, 2-0.
A legendary day, which was commemorated during Ajax
centennial year. The original Ajax and Panathinaikos teams from
1971, played each other once again at the Amsterdam ArenA, in
December of 2000. Ajax, with Velibor Vasovic, lost this time
around: 0-1.
In total, he played 204 official games for the
Amsterdammers, including 145 league games, 26 domestic cup
games and 29 European games, in which he scored 18 goals. He
won three Dutch championships and three Dutch national cups
