John Jaakke to become Ajax chairman in 2003
28 April: Ajax has finally presented Michael van Praag's
successor: John Jaakke. The 47 year-old lawyer will be the new
chairman of AFC Ajax Amsterdam. He will take over Van Praag's
function in the fall of 2003, and not - as originally scheduled
- in the fall of this year. Michael van Praag has agreed to
stay in function for an extra year.
Jaakke's assignment comes as a surprise. He is a long-time
Ajax fan, but has no history within the club. Several names
circulated in the 'rumour circuit', such as former board member
Uri Coronel, current board member and director of technical
affairs Klaas Nuninga, current director and Royal Dutch
Airlines (KLM) executive Leo van Wijk and even Johan Cruijff,
who instantly turned the offer down.
Jaakke's name has, so far, not been mentioned in any news
source. The Board Of Members voted for him unanimously.
Jaakke: "I have been an Ajax fan for years. When an offer
like this is made to you, you can hardly refuse. When I was
first called in late January, I discussed the proposal with my
family and at work. Shortly after that, I've given in to
emotions and have said 'yes'."
"I am very happy that Michael van Praag is willing to
continue for one more year", continues Jaakke. "During that
year, he will introduce me to the members and many other people
within the club. We have thoroughly discussed all this. During
the upcoming months, I will prepare for my new function in the
background."
Since Ajax has a quotation at the Amsterdam Stock Exchange,
Ajax consists of a club (AFC Ajax) and a limited liability
company (Ajax NV, the Dutch equivalent of Ajax Ltd.). Just like
Michael van Praag, John Jaakke will be the chairman of the
club, as well as the president of the Board Of Directors of
Ajax Ltd. (MP)
