Ajax reserves win first match in Amstel Cup tournament
10 August: In their first group match of the Amstel Cup
tournament, the reserves of Ajax won against amateur side
Huizen, 5-1. Richard Knopper was very important, scoring the
first two goals for Ajax. Ajax striker Kwame Quansah, who
returned from a serious injury got injured again and had to be
replaced by Brutil Hosé. Hosé, whom is being told
to look for another club, played an inspired match scoring the
third and fifth goals for Ajax. In between, Cedric van der Gun
also scored a goal.
Because Ajax-2 won their league last year they are now
allowed to play in the group matches of the Amstel Cup
tournament. First division team Volendam also plays in the Ajax
group. They won yesterday's match against the number four in
the group, ADO '20 (7-2). The winner of the group will go
further in a knock-out system.
Not until December, when the round of the last sixteen are
played, will the big clubs such as PSV, Feyenoord and Ajax-1
join in. It is possible that the reserves of Ajax will still be
in the tournament then. The last time this happened was in
1995, when on the same evening both teams of Ajax lost their
cup matches; Ajax-1 against Feyenoord, Ajax-2 against
Utrecht.
In 1987/88, Ajax-2 did even better than Ajax-1, who were
already out of the tournament while Ajax-2 continued winning
against big teams like Sparta, Groningen and Volendam. The Ajax
board then decided to let the players of Ajax-1 play for
Ajax-2. The players of Ajax-2 (like the talented youngsters
Witschge, Roy and the De Boer twins) of course were furious,
since it were they who had taken Ajax that far. The players of
Ajax-1, now playing for Ajax-2, made it even worse when they
failed to beat first division team RKC in the next round.
