Ajax-2 into next round of Amstel Cup

17 August: On Thursday evening, the reserves of Ajax won
their last group match in the first round of the Amstel Cup,
beating FC Volendam at the First Division side's home ground,
2-3. It was Ajax' third victory in a row, thereby securing the
number one position in the group.
Ajax opened the scoring after only 5 minutes, when Brutil
Hosé lofted the ball nicely over the Volendam goalkeeper
Need. Twenty minutes later, Ikedia scored the second goal of
the evening, also with a nice chip. After the break Volendam
tried hard to equalize. They succeeded part way by scoring an
early 1-2 in the 48th minute. After that they were strong, but
failed to score.
And after Heitinga had scored to make it 1-3, the Volendam
mission was too difficult. They needed a point very badly, and
did score a second goal 15 minutes before full time, but they
couldn't manage the equalizer. Amateur side Huizen now need
only one point to qualify for the next round instead of
Volendam.
As winner of the group, Ajax-2 will now enter the knock-out
system of the tournament. Ajax-2 coach Jan Olde Riekerink said
he was glad that they won this group. "It wasn't a requirement
for going through this round, but we have played three good
matches." As a player for Sparta, Olde Riekerink (38) lost
against Ajax-2 in the 1986/87 season. "I considered that
extremely humiliating." Maybe he will get his chance to be on
the other side now, if Ajax-2 draws Sparta in the next round.
"I don't hope so, because that means we also have to knock out
Aron Winter."
The draw of the next round is next Wednesday. The games will
be played on 20 September. Not until December do the top clubs
like PSV, Feyenoord and Ajax-1 join the tournament.(BV)
