Young Ajax reaches next round Amstel Cup

19 September: Young Ajax has reached the next round of the Amstel Cup by beating satellite club Haarlem 4-0. It was shocking to see how easily the Ajax-reserves could compete with these players from the first division. In the first half Haarlem might have dreamed of some success, but in the second half Ajax was by far the better team.

Young Ajax played with John O'Brien and Andy Van der Meyde in the starting line-up. They were the only players with significant first team experience. And although these youngsters were far the better team, they couldn't create any danger in the first half and had to wait until the 58th minute to score their first goal. After a beautiful solo move, Stefano Seedorf scored the important opener, 1-0.

After that first strike, the Ajax goals came very fast. In a period of a less than 10 minutes Bechan, Van der Meijde and Quansah scored their goals for Ajax, each one even more beautiful than the last. Bechan scored after a nice and fast combination with Mofokeng, Van der Meyde and Quansah supporting. Two minutes later Van der Meyde volleyed the ball out of a corner from a difficult angle into the goal. Another five minutes later Quansah fired the ball from 30 meters over Haarlem goalie (and Ajax loan-out) Serge van der Ban.

The draw for the next round will take place when all other games have been played. Top teams like Ajax-1, PSV and Feyenoord still won't show up in that round. But other Eredivisie teams like Willem II and Roda JC have already been eliminated from the Amstel Cup, while the reserves of Ajax are still there. A extremely nice success for the club. (BV)
