Ajax to sell Germinal Beerschot Antwerp stock
01 July: Ajax intends to sell its Germinal Beerschot Antwerp
stock. The Amsterdam club has a majority's stake of 72.5% in
the Belgian First Class club, but is apparently dissatisfied
with what the co-operation has brought. The club is currently
negotiating with a number of possible, but as yet unknown
buyers.
Ajax acquired 30% of the stock in the 'GBA', a merger of
Antwerp clubs KFC Germinal Ekeren and KVV Beerschot, in July of
1999. By increasing its stake to 51% on 30 June 2000, Ajax
became the majority's stakeholder. In order to guarantee the
continuity, the Amsterdammers later increased their stake to
72.5%. In this transaction, an earlier loan to GBA was payed
off with stock.
Ajax will continue to co-operate with GBA on a technical
level after the stock has been sold. The future relationship
with GBA will have the structure of the co-operation between
Ajax and its Dutch First Division sister club, FC Haarlem. This
means that the players currently stalled at GBA (Aaron Mokoena,
Anthony Obodai, Walker Americo Fronio and Kwame Quansah) will
stay in Antwerp to play for GBA.
Ajax also has majority's stakes in Ghanese side Ashanti
Goldfields and Ajax Cape Town from South-Africa. According to
Ajax' statement on Ajax.nl, the club is not planning to let go
its stake in those clubs. (MP)
