Ajax turns down Mendes da Silva purchase option
28 April: Ajax has decided not to offer Sparta Rotterdam
defender David Mendes da Silva a contract for next season. The
20 year-old defender joined Ajax on 19 December 2002, on a six
month loan. The agreement with the Rotterdam First Division
side included a special clause, which gave Ajax the right to
buy the Holland U21 international after that.
Ajax's decision not to use that clause comes remarkably
early: Mendes da Silva was injured during most of his stay in
Amsterdam. He played eight games for Young Ajax in the
Beloftencompetitie ('Talent Competition') and sat on the
Ajax-1 bench during the Eredivisie game against RBC Roosendaal
on 05 April (4-1). However, he didn't play a single minute for
Ajax-1 yet.
Mendes da Silva will stay at Ajax for the remainder of the
season. After the summer break, however, he will return to
Rotterdam's Spangen district, to serve his ongoing contract at
Sparta Rotterdam. (MP)
