Pius Ikedia loaned out to RBC Roosendaal next season
28 May: Nigerian right winger Pius Ikedia, currently loaned
out to FC Groningen, will join Eredivisie side RBC Roosendaal
this summer on a two year loan. The deal comes as a surprise,
as FC Groningen was recently said to be interested in buying
the fast Ajax winger, or at least extend his loan by one
season.
It is unknown whether Ajax or RBC Roosendaal will pay
Ikedia's salary. Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf reported
this week that RBC Roosendaal was buying Ikedia from Ajax, but
this news turned out to be premature.
Pius Ikedia was already a Nigerian international when he
joined Ajax in 1999, coming from ASEC Mimosas, Nigeria. But
after his Ajax-1 debut on 28 November 1999 (AZ vs Ajax, 1-2) he
never secured a spot in the starting line-up, due to the stiff
competition of Andy van der Meyde and others.
Ikedia played 25 league games for Ajax in three seasons (two
goals), 23 friendlies (seven goals), two Amstel Cup games and
five European matches for Ajax in three seasons. He wore the
strip of Nigeria's national team twelve times. This year he
played 26 games for FC Groningen, in which he scored one goal.
