Richard Knopper loaned out to Heerenveen
26 June: After a one year's stay at Greek club Aris
Saloniki, Richard Knopper returns to Holland, now moving to SC
Heerenveen. The Ajax midfielder will once again be
loaned out for a season. At Heerenveen, Knopper (25) will be
united with former Ajacied Gerald Sibon, with whom he played
two seasons at Ajax.
Knopper made his Ajax 1 debut in November of 1997, in the
away match against Sparta (0-5). And in 1999 he was voted by
the Ajax supporters as most talented player, receiving the
'Marco van Basten Trophy'. His best season at Ajax was
ironically in Ajax' poorest of the past years: 1999-2000.
Knopper was one of the most valuable players that season,
scoring fifteen goals as a midfielder.
Due to a series of injuries, Knopper never broke through
after that. In Adriaanse's first full season, Knopper was
injured for almost the entire season, playing only eight
matches that year. In his last year at Ajax, he won the Dutch
League, adding another thirteen matches to his total of 66 Ajax
league matches. Knopper's contract at Ajax lasts until 2005.
