Ajax extends Mitea's contract until summer of 2007
13 April: Nicolae Mitea will be tied to Ajax until the
summer of 2007. The young Romanian left winger's original
contract would have expired on 30 June 2005, but
included a one-sided option for Ajax to extend by two seasons.
Mitea has made spectacular progress this season, so Ajax's
decision to use that option does not come as a surprise.
Mitea hardly had any experience on the highest level when
he
first joined in August 2003, coming from Romanian giants FC
Dinamo Bucharest. At the time he had nine first team
matches behind his name. As per 13 April 2004 his number of
appearances in official Ajax-1 games is more than three times
that number: 23 in the Eredivisie, four in the Champions
League and one in the Amstel Cup. He scored no less than seven
Eredivisie goals for Ajax, a remarkably high average of some
0.30 goal per game.
Mitea can be regarded as one of the revelations of the
season. The staff of the Romanian national team also noticed
this: Mitea made his official début for Romania on 20
August 2003 and currently has three caps for his country.
A pay-raise was part of the extension of his contract.
However, Ajax did not reveal the financial details of the 19
year-old's improved deal. (MP)
