Ankle injury abruptly ends season for Escude
06 May: Julien Escudé will have to
watch Sunday's possible championship
winner against NAC Breda from the main terrace
of the ArenA. The French defender sustained an ankle injury in
training on Wednesday morning. Scans in
hospital showed slight damage of the left ankle
ligament. Ajax's #4 will be sidelined for an estimated six
weeks, which means his season is effectively over.
No player from Ajax's first squad saw more action than the
French left-footer's 3,412 minutes this season. So far
Escudé missed only one Eredivisie game - and this was
for a special reason: he was granted the day off so that he
could witness the birth of his son Ange. He was a starter in
all other games: 31 times in total. 29 times he played the full
90 minutes. In total Escudé played 39 official games for
Ajax. Sadly, he will be sidelined for the great apotheosis.
Three more games are on the agenda for Ajax. After Sunday's
home game against NAC Breda, one more league fixture will
follow: at Willem II on 16 May. On Saturday 22 May Ajax will
play a friendly match against a team of Amsterdam amateurs,
selected by Peter van de Rijt on behalf of the weekly Ajax
talkshow on AT5 television, FC Godenzonen ('Sons Of
God FC').
Escudé's injury is an unexpected setback for
Ajax, but there also was good news. Both Zlatan
Ibrahimovic (groin injury) and Rafaël van der Vaart (ankle
injury) seemed ready for Sunday during today's training.
Both players missed last week's match against FC Zwolle and
were not expected to be fit in time. (MP)
