Groin surgery to rule Ibrahimovic out for two months
22 January: After a long period of playing on painkillers
and taking as much rest as possible Zlatan Ibrahimovic
has deciced to undergo surgery, in order to get rid of his
persistent groin injury. Rest and a special training program
did not have the desired effect. The operation, which will
take place today, will keep the Swede sidelined for an
estimated six to eight weeks.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been bothered by his painful groin
throughout the first half of the season. Special treatment and
lots of rest were expected to be enough for a full recovery,
but relapses kept occurring. Ibrahimovic took the decision to
undergo surgery himself. The Ajax medical staff and coach
Ronald Koeman fully understand his decision.
His groin injury wasn't the only injury Zlatan Ibrahimovic
has been dealing with. In the Champions League home fixture
against
AC Milan on 26 November 2003 defender Paolo Maldini
accidentally stepped on the Swede's toe. One of Maldini's studs
went straight through the leather of Ibrahimovic's boot. His
toe later appeared to be broken. However, his toe injury is
recovering as scheduled and requires no further medical
intervention.
Due to his groin surgery Zlatan Ibrahimovic will
not see action during Ajax USA's Rendezvous in
Amsterdam in early February. He is expected to go back in
training in the second week of March. (MP)
