Nicolae Mitea to undergo groin surgery
15 May: Nicolae Mitea will undergo groin surgery this week.
The Romanian left winger, who received the Marco van
BastenTrophy for 'Talent of the Year' last weekend,
has been struggling with a groin injury for several
weeks. Mitea is expected to have fully recovered in
time for Ajax's first training day of the nest season,
Wednesday 07 July.
Mitea (20) last saw first team action on 11 April, in the
Eredivisie away game at
Feyenoord (1-1), but has been sidelined since. His
persistent groin injury is very similar to that of Zlatan
Ibrahimovic, who also went
under the knife as the pain did not go away.
The official Ajax website, Ajax.nl, refers to Mitea's
surgery as a "minor operation". Mitea is expected to be fit and
ready for action on 07 July, when Ajax's first team goes back
in training.
Nicolae Mitea is generally regarded as the revelation of the
season for Ajax. The young Romanian was
contracted for the future, but ended up playing 23
Eredivisie games, one Amstel Cup fixture and four Champions
League matches for Ajax, mostly as a substitute. He scored
seven goals in league games, thereby becoming the by far most
productive winger for the Amsterdammers this season. (MP)
