Van der Vaart accepts KNVB proposal: suspended for three games

29 October: Ajax captain Rafaël van der Vaart has accepted the proposal made by the KNVB disciplinary committee, to settle the red card he received in last Sunday's away fixture at PSV (2-2): a suspension of three Eredivisie games, plus one conditional. Ajax's #10 will now have to miss the Eredivisie games against AZ, ADO Den Haag and SC Heerenveen, but will be available for the 30 November 'Classic' against Feyenoord.

Van der Vaart was sent off in the 45th minute of PSV vs Ajax for kicking PSV's John de Jong in the back while the latter was lying on the grass. By accepting the settlement proposal the case will not be forwarded to the public prosecutor of the KNVB.

In this morning's edition of Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad Ajax's general director, Arie van Eijden, explained why Van der Vaart and Ajax accepted the settlement proposal. Player and club want to get the case out of the way. Van Eijden: "A lot has been said and written about this and we don't want the whole discussion to start all over again in a disciplinary case (...) Besides: I expect this was not the last we've heard from Zeist."

Van Eijden is referring to Zlatan's alleged 'elbow' against PSV defender Kevin Hofland, which is expected by many to lead to a second case involving an Ajax player. Meanwhile, the same is expected to happen to PSV players Mark van Bommel (for an 'elbow' against Van der Vaart) and Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink (for a kick in the face of Bogdan Lobont, who required stitches in the opening phase of the game). The KNVB is expected to announce today which cases will be investigated. (MP)

Update: At the end of the afternoon the KNVB announced that the disciplinary committee will start an investigation of PSV captain Mark van Bommel's alleged elbow-hit against Rafaël van der Vaart. The committee decided to start no investigation of the actions of Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Ajax) and Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink (PSV), which means they will not be suspended.
