Ajax release jersey numbers for 2004-2005 season
03 August: Ajax supporters who want
to buy a replica Ajax jersey with name
and number of their favourite player printed on the back
can safely do so now: the Amsterdam club released the
definitive list of jersey numbers for the new season today.
Not too much has changed. Most of the Ajacieden will wear
the same jersey number as last season. There are a few changes,
though: last season's #12, Johnny Heitinga, will now wear #3
(Ajax's last #3 was André Bergdølmo). Anthony
Obodai, last season's #26, is Ajax's new #12. Victor Sikora,
who was told to look out for a new club, 'dropped' from #11 to
#30. The traditional jersey number for Ajax's left winger
has been assigned to Tom Soetaers instead.
Sikora is not the only Ajacied who will have to accept a
higher jersey number than last season. John O'Brien -
still fighting against injury - will wear #15 this season.
O'Brien had #5 last season, traditionally the number for Ajax's
left fullback. Koeman's decision to give Maxwell that kit
number this season was not hard to predict.
Jersey number #14, previously worn by Jelle Van Damme, will
now go to Thomas Vermaelen, officially a newcomer to the first
team. Remarkably, Hatem Trabelsi is still listed as Ajax's #2,
in spite of the fact that he is far beyond the 'point of no
return' in his conflict with the club. His transfer to Arsenal,
however, seems to have fallen through.
Finally, Ajax's only new signing so far, third goalkeeper
Hans Vonk, has been assigned the jersey number that was Sander
Boschker's last season: #31. The official Ajax-1 squad for the
new season, including jersey numbers, is listed in its entirety
in Ajax USA's 2004-2005 roster
page.
Ajax jersey replicas 2004-2005
Ajax supporters who want to buy an official Ajax jersey
replica, on- or offline, have an extra choice this season.
For the first time in club history Ajax will be seen
playing in three different kits this
season: the traditional, red and white
home kit, the yellow and marine blue
Eredivisie away kit and the brand new, limited
edition 'cup
competition' away kit, which Ajax first
wore during the Amsterdam
Tournament game against Panathinaikos this
weekend.
The new 'cup edition' kit was designed for away fixtures in
domestic and European cup competition. A limited number of
'cup edition' away kits was available
for 'pre-orders' at the Ajax Online
Fanshop, but sold out in no-time. Fans interested in the
'cup edition' kit will now have to wait until the official
release of the kit in September. The home and 'Eredivisie away'
kits are already available. (MP)
