Broken finger to keep Lobont sidelined for six weeks
05 January: Bad luck for Bogdan Lobont: the Romanian
goalkeeper broke the middle finger of his right
hand during today's training session at the Amsterdam
ArenA and will be sidelined for another six weeks. Lobont had
only just returned to the squad, having recovered from a knee
injury sustained on 24 October 2004.
The current season seems to be cursed for Lobont, Ajax's #1
goalkeeper of last season. In pre-season coach Ronald Koeman
told him that he was going to opt for Maarten Stekelenburg.
Stekelenburg picked up an injury and Lobont was back between
the posts on 19 September. However, just over one month later
he twisted his knee in the Eredivisie away game at
PSV. Lobont was out until the winter break. This week
Lobont returned to the squad, fit and ready to battle for a
starting slot.
A broken middle finger, a damaged hamstring due to
a twisted knee... Lobont's career at Ajax is a bizarre chain
reaction of non-related injuries. An injury of the right
shoulder cost him months in early 2001, an injury of
the left shoulder (August
2002) kept him sidelined for over four months. In January 2003,
finally, he sustained a back injury that lingered on for over a
month.
Ronald Koeman will now travel to South-Africa
and start the second half of the season with the other
two goalkeepers in his squad: young Maarten Stekelenburg and
the surprising first man of the moment, veteran Hans Vonk.
