Fans start campaign for return of old club crest
07 March: The weekend of 05 and 06 March marked the
start of a fan campaign that wants to 'give Ajax its face
back'. The objective: to persuade the club's Board Of
Members to abandon the modern version of the Ajax club
crest (introduced in 1991) and to re-introduce the old, classic
image of Ajax, the Greek warrior, which was Ajax's official
club logo from 1928 to 1991.
The campaign has its own website, www.ajaxlogo.nl (Dutch
only), and (no Amsterdammer can possibly haved missed
them... they're everywhere) its own posters and
its own 'web posters'. The
slogan: 'Give Ajax its face back!'. The series of 'web posters'
have a different slogan. On one of them we see Johan Cruyff in
a Feyenoord jersey (he played for Ajax's arch-enemy in
1983-1984). The pay-off: 'Some mistakes can not be undone.
Others can!'
The Ajax board decided to 'modernize' the Ajax logo in 1991.
The old crest was replaced by a stylized, graphic version, made
up of eleven simple lines. Although the logo change seemed to
bring Ajax instant good fortune (they won the UEFA Cup in their
first season and the Champions League three years later) the
large part of the Ajax supporters were opposed to it. A
few years the Ajax board partly gave in to the
objections by launching a series of 'classic' fan products with
the old logo on it. The fans have now decided to perservere and
push for an official and complete return of the 'real' Ajax
crest.
The old Ajax logo and a campaign wallpaper are
available as downloads, whereas
the 'Some mistakes...' posters can be downloaded as
PDF
files. Website and posters are the kick-off of
the campaign. Ajax USA will keep non-Dutch supporters posed on
future developments in the designated discussion
thread on Ajax Talk. (MP)
