Hans Vonk signs renewed deal until summer 2006
18 May: Hans Vonk will play for Ajax for another season. The
veteran goalkeeper (35), who joined Ajax on a free
transfer from SC Heerenveen last summer and signed
a contract for one season, penned a new deal at the
Amsterdam ArenA today, thereby committing to the Amsterdam club
for another season, until 30 June 2006.
"I am very happy here," Vonk said. "I got to play many
games. Whether or not that will be the case next season is yet
to be seen. Maarten Stekelenburg and Bogdan Lobont have gotten
better this season."
Hans Vonk (born Alberton, South-Africa, 30 January 1970)
played for amateur sides VV Woudrichem and Unitas and
professional clubs RKC, FC Wageningen, FC Den Bosch and SC
Heerenveen (eight seasons!) before it was announced he was
going to join Ajax as their third goalkeeper on
02 June 2004. Vonk was the successor of Sander
Boschker as Ajax's third goalie. Boschker left Amsterdam
disappointed: he did not see a minute of official first team
action in the 2003-2004 season. Vonk was considerably more
fortunate: so far he defended the Ajax goal in 19 matches
in the Dutch Eredivisie, two in the Champions League and
another two in the Amstel Cup.
In total Vonk played the impressive number of 454
professional league games in The Netherlands. Vonk has a Dutch
as well as a South-African passport. He is the number one
goalkeeper of Bafana Bafana, the South-African
national team, for which he played 37 games so far,
including three fixtures at the 2002 World Cup in Japan and
South Korea. (MP)
