John van den Brom is new Director of Youth Development
07 June: Almost three months after director of youth
development Danny Blind moved on to replace Ronald Koeman
as head-coach of Ajax-1, Ajax have announced that the new
boss of De Toekomst as per July 1st 2005 will be John van den
Brom. Van den Brom started the season as head-coach of
Young Ajax. When Danny Blind (who also coached Ajax
A1) left De Toekomst, Van den Brom took over the
coaching of the A1. He coached two teams at the same time for
the remainder of the season and clinched the Dutch championship
with both of them.
Just like his predecessor Danny Blind he will be in charge
of Ajax's youth system and coach of the higher teams at De
Toekomst at the same time. Blind coached Ajax A1, Van den Brom
will continue to coach Young Ajax next season.
As a player John van den Brom (born Amersfoort, 04 October
1966) spent seven seasons at Vitesse Arnhem
before Ajax coach Louis van Gaal offered signed
him in the summer of 1993 as the as the successor of
Wim Jonk, Ajax's tremendously succesful 'number four'. In
his two seasons at De Meer Van den Brom played 44 Eredivisie
games for Ajax, scoring 7 goals. He also had two domestic
cup and five European performances for Ajax. In spite of these
figures Van den Brom was never certain of a starting slot in
Ajax-1, mainly due to the presence of 'prodigal son' Frank
Rijkaard in those years. After his spell at Ajax he returned to
Vitesse and also played for De Graafschap.
During the last years of his player career he obtained his
KNVB certificate for professional coaching, so that he could
return to Ajax as a qualified head-coach on
29 July 2004.
The position of director of youth development was just one
of the vacant positions at Ajax: the Amsterdam club are still
looking for a new technical director and a new coach of Ajax
A1. (MP)
