Maduro pens new deal, commits to Ajax until 2008
28 June: Hedwiges Maduro has renewed his
contract with Ajax today, thereby committing to the Amsterdam
club until 30 June 2008. His previous deal would have
expired in the summer of 2007. By penning his new contract the
20 year-old also received a considerable pay-raise.
Hedwiges Maduro (born Almere, 13 February 1985) is a product
of the Ajax youth system and made his first team début
in the UEFA Cup away game at AJ Auxerre on 24 February
2005. He was a starter for Ajax in the remainder of the
season. In total he had 14 appearances, either as a
defensive midfielder or as a central defender. He scored
two goals. Only 27 days after his début in Ajax's first
team he also became the
103rd Ajacied to make his Holland
début.
This month the young Ajacied was the captain of the Dutch
U-20 team during the World Cup for U-20 teams in The
Netherlands. Maduro had a fine tournament,
scored against Australia
and Benin
and was named as one of the best players of the tournament by
the international press. Holland were eliminated by Nigeria
last Saturday after a series of 24
(!) penalties.
Due to his activities for the national team during the
summer break Maduro will be given a week's extra vacation. The
same goes for Ajacieden such as Urby Emanuelson (Holland U-20)
and Angelos Charisteas, who played at the Confederations Cup
with Greece. They will not go in training on
Monday 04 July with the rest of the Ajax squad. (MP)
