NAC Breda move for Victor Sikora
15 June: Victor Sikora, who was loaned out to SC Heerenveen
last season, has found himself a new club: the Ajax winger
will join Eredivisie side NAC Breda. Sikora's
contract with Ajax will expire in the summer of 2006.
The player will be loaned out to the Breda club for one
season, after which he will join them permanently on a free
transfer. He has already penned his two year
deal (2006-2008).
The transfer marks the end of Sikora's unfortunate and
unsuccesful career as an Ajacied. Having played for Go Ahead
Eagles for five seasons (107 league games, 34 goals) and
for Vitesse for three seasons (84 Eredivisie games, 20 goals)
Ajax landed Sikora (born Deventer, 11 April 1978) on 22 July
2002, after a long 'battle' with English Premiership side
Fulham FC. He was an international for Holland at that point.
He wore the orange strip six times in total.
Expectations of the 'next Marc Overmars' were high, but
Sikora never lived up to them. In total he had 54 official
appearances for Ajax: 44 in the Eredivisie (7 goals), 8 in
UEFA competition and 2 in domestic cup competition (Amstel Cup
and Johan Cruyff Shield).
At the end of the 2003-2004 season the player was told that
there was no future for him at the Amsterdam ArenA. On
17 August 2004 Sikora joined SC Heerenveen on loan. He
had 19 Eredivisie appearances for the Frisian club this season
(one goal), but - partly due to injuries - he failed to make an
impression, so that Heerenveen decided not to sign him
permanently.
At NAC Breda, who had a throughly disappointing season and
want to perform better next year, Sikora will be re-united with
Pierre van Hooydonk, with whom he formed a succesful 'striker
couple' in his Vitesse years. (MP)
