Ajacieden turn down KNVB settlement proposals

04 April: Three Ajacieden (Juanfran, head-coach Danny Blind and his assistant Gerard van der Lem) are facing penalties for their behaviour in the two tumultuous Roda JC games of recent weeks. The Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) gave the three Ajax men the chance to settle their respective cases by accepting a penalty, but they all turned the proposals down. Their cases will now be investigated by the KNVB's disciplinary committee.

Left fullback Juanfran was red carded by referee Roelof Luinge in the 78th minute of last Sunday's Eredivisie game in Kerkrade, for allegedly kicking Roda captain Gregoor van Dijk when the ball was already out of play. The KNVB's settlement proposal: a suspension for four Eredivisie games. Ajax and Juanfran did not accept. The Spaniard will now have to face the disciplinary committee on Thursday evening 06 April at the KNVB headquarters in the town of Zeist.

Coach-assistant Gerard van der Lem turned down a settlement proposal of one game's suspension plus a 500 euro fine for insulting referee Eric Braamhaar, immediately after the 22 March Gatorade Cup semi-final against Roda JC. Danny Blind's assistant will now have to appear in front of the disciplinary committee on Tuesday 11 April.

The most discussed case is that of Ajax head-coach Danny Blind, who was sent to the stands by referee during the half-time break of Roda JC - Ajax on Sunday 02 April. Blind stormed onto the pitch immediately after Luinge's had whistled for half-time, just when three Ajax players had a free passage to goalkeeper Kujovic. Blind and Luinge got into a heated discussion about the incident. After the game Luinge claimed that Blind had abused him: "I will not repeat what Blind said. Let me just say that the words he used were inappropriate for young children. Yes, he abused me. And in my opinion a football manager should realize that he's a rolemodel. What Blind said to me was unacceptable."

Blind, however, strongly denied that he called the referee names. "If Luinge claims that I abused him, he is lying. It was time when Roda were going to take that corner kick. I find it incredible that he let Roda play on in our penalty area for an extra 40 seconds, only to blow his whistle immediately the moment we took over and had a free passage with three players. That's what I told him, in a respectful manner. I might have been a bit more emotional than I am now, but I absolutely did not abuse him."

Just like Gerard van der Lem, Danny Blind turned down a settlement proposal of a suspension for one match plus a fine of 500 euros. Van der Lem and Blind can drive to Zeist together on Tuesday 11 April. On that date the KNVB discplinary committee will hear them and come to a verdict. (MP)
