Lindgren joins Groningen on one year loan deal
09 August: FC Groningen have reacted resolutely
to the news that Ajax would like to loan Rasmus Lindgren
out: the club contacted Ajax almost immediately and the
clubs struck a deal the same day. The Swedish midfielder
will join the northern Eredivisie outfit immediately and
play for them until the end of the season.
Rasmus Lindgren (born Landskrona, Sweden, 29 November 1984)
signed his first Ajax contract in 2003, had a difficult start
with Young Ajax but developed into a key player for the Ajax
reserves and got to wear the captain's
armband for his team. He made his first team début
in the 13 February 2005 Eredivisie fixture at NAC
Breda. Lindgren, who is also a starter for Sweden's U-21
national team, had five Ajax-1 appearances in total. This
season he started the pre-season campaign as an official member
of the Ajax-1 squad.
Ajax revealed the names of four players today who, due to
stiff competition and the preferences of head-coach Danny
Blind, are not expected to see much action this season and are
free to look out for a new club. Ajax want to sell Daniël
de Ridder and Anthony Obodai; Rasmus Lindgren and Tom De Mul
may only be loaned out.
Hans Nijland, general director of FC Groningen, told FC
Groningen.nl: "We started following him last season and also
contacted Ajax about him, but then he made his first team
début and opted for a contract renewal. We had a good
picture of him already, so that we could do
business immediately. We know what he's capable of. We're
also very happy that Lindgren loved to come to
Groningen. This shows we're making a good impression as a
club." (MP)
