Luton Town move for Anthony Obodai
26 August: Anthony Obodai is no longer an Ajacied. The
Amsterdam club have come to an agreement with English
Championship (formerly Division One) outfit Luton Town about
the transfer of the Ghanaian midfielder. Obodai and his agent
are currently negotiating the terms of the
player's contract. No problems are expected.
Anthony Obodai (born Accra, Ghana, 06 August 1982) joined
Ajax in the summer of 2001, coming from Liberty FC in his
African fatherland. Obodai was part of the memorable Young
Ajax crop that won the 2002 reserves championship in The
Netherlands and made it to the semi-final of the 'big'
Amstel Cup. After one season in Amsterdam the player
was loaned out to Belgian First Class side Germinal
Beerschot Antwerp. Ajax had a partnership with 'GBA' at the
time, although the Amsterdammers were about to sell their
majority's stake in the club when Obodai joined
them. Obodai played 29 league games for 'GBA'. He
scored two goals.
Obodai returned to Ajax after one season and made his first
team début on 23 November 2003 in the Eredivisie home
game against SC Heerenveen. In the following two seasons he had
21 Eredivisie appearances for Ajax in total, mostly as a
substitute. He scored his only two goals in the away game at
Willem II on 16 May 2004, one week after having
celebrated the winning of the Dutch championship with
Ajax. Obodai also played for Ajax in the Amstel Cup (2
matches), the Johan Cruyff Shield (1 game), the UEFA Champions
League (6 games) and the UEFA Cup (2 games). He had 32
official Ajax-1 appearances in total.
At the start of the current season the 23 year-old
midfielder was informed by head-coach Danny Blind that he was
not going to see much Ajax-1 action this season and that he was
free to look out for a new club. Sparta Rotterdam were
interested in the Ghanaian, but Obodai opted for a move to
England. (MP)
