Piet Keizer agrees to 'technical advisor' role
22 March: Piet Keizer, legendary left winger of the 'Golden
Ajax' of the 1970s and a scout for the Amsterdam club since
April 2001, has accepted a new job at the Amsterdam ArenA. As
of 01 April 2006 Keizer will become Ajax's official
'technical advisor'. He will provide technical director
Martin van Geel with regular input and advise.
Piet Keizer (born Amsterdam, 14 June 1943) made his Ajax-1
début on 05 February 1961 in an Eredivisie home against
rivals Feyenoord. He soon developed into a brilliant (though
notoriously fickle) left winger in the 'Golden Ajax' team of
coach Rinus Michels and captain Johan Cruyff. In total, Keizer
had 490 appearances for Ajax, in which he scored 189 goals. His
last appearance was on 13 October 1974. Only three Ajacieden
had more appearances for Ajax-1 than Piet Keizer, who
also won 34 caps for Oranje (11 goals).
With Ajax, Keizer clinched 6 Dutch championships and 5
Dutch Cup, as well as un amazing number of international
trophies: 3 European Champions Cups, 2 European Super
Cups, 1 World Cup (or Intercontinental Cup) and 1 Intertoto
Cup.
Keizer's 'promotion' in the Ajax hierarchy seems to
underscore the plans of general director Maarten Fontein and
technical director Martin van Geel, who are currently working
on a new 'masterplan' for Ajax, which will reportedly combine
an improved international strategy with a return to the club's
old values: a warm 'club atmosphere', a focus on primarily
Dutch youth players and offensive, entertaining 'Ajax-style'
football. (MP)
