Urby Emanuelson pens new contract until 2011
28 March: One of Ajax's greatest talents and
best players of the current season has agreed to
an extension of his existing deal. Urby Emanuelson
committed to Ajax until 30 June 2011 today, thereby
squashing the (vague) rumours of a summer move to
Juventus. Emanuelson's old deal would have expired in
the summer of 2008.
Ajax's technical director Martin van Geel was a happy
man when Emanuelson (born Amsterdam, 16 June 1986) had
signed his new contract: "It is very good to see that a player
from our own youth system is developing so strongly. Urby has
shown that he is of great value for this team. This contract
extension underscores that both parties have faith in the
future."
The 19 year-old Amsterdammer made his official Ajax-1
début in the dismal UEFA Cup away game at AJ Auxerre on
24 February 2005. So far, he had 40 official appearances
for Ajax's first team: 28 in the Eredivisie (1 goal), 3 in
domestic cup games and 9 in UEFA competition. He
performed so well that he was called up twice by
Oranje boss Marco van Basten, although he is
yet to make his Holland début. He also signed an
extended and improved deal until 2008 on
18 June 2005. Roughly nine months later his second contract
extension is a fact. (MP)
