Gabri agrees to contract extension until summer 2011
09 May: Gabriel García de la Torre, whom we all know
as Gabri, has committed to Ajax for two extra seasons. The
contract of the Spanish midfielder would have expired on 30
June 2009, but has now been extended until 30 June 2011. By
signing a contract renewal Gabri underscored what he has said
in several interviews this season, namely that he is a very
happy man in Amsterdam.
'Gabri' García de la Torre (born Sallent, Spain, 10
February 1979) joined Ajax on
06 June 2006 after having worked under coach Henk ten
Cate at FC Barcelona. At Ajax he was instantly
acknowledged as a very useful 'box to box' midfielder. Later in
the season almost everybody in Amsterdam started to see the
light: Gabri is a key player in the current Ajax team. So far,
he saw action in 43 official Ajax matches, in which he netted
six goals in total.
Gabri will be sorely missed in the post-season play-offs.
The Spaniard was sent off in last Sunday's cup final against AZ
and accepted the
settlement proposal from the KNVB prosecutor: a
suspension of four matches, including one conditional. The 28
year-old will miss both play-off matches against SC Heerenveen
and (if Ajax advance) the first leg of the second round
play-off encounter with either AZ or FC Twente. (MP)
