Broken shinbone to keep Davids sidelined for three months
21 July: Edgar Davids was clearly in pain when he picked up
a knock in a man-to-man duel against Go Ahead Eagles and
sat down in the grass at the sideline, but at that point it was
unclear how bad his injury really was. The doctor's conclusion
after the game: it is bad. The veteran midfielder's left
shinbone appears to be broken. He will be out for at least
three months, reason enough for Ajax to look out for a
replacement at the transfer market.
Ajax's technical director, Martin van Geel, told newspaper
De Telegraaf: "On Monday we will investigate the
options to cope with this loss. Landing a replacement,
temporarily or permanently, surely will be
an option to discuss. We realize that you can't
replace a guy like Edgar Davids just like that. He is not only
an excellent football player, but also a guy who always manages
to boost the team. He's a key character within the
group."
More transfer news (or should we say: no transfer
news?)... According to newspaper De Telegraaf
'Cape Town boys Thembinkosi 'Terror' Fanteni and Sameegh Doutie
will return to South Africa without a contract. The two Ajax
Cape Town players were on a try-out at Ajax and saw action in a
number of pre-season friendlies (both players scored a goal).
Striker Fanteni (23) has been deemed not good enough. Ajax will
continue to follow wight winger Doutie, who is still young and
might develop into a player of Ajax calibre. (MP)
