Tickets for away games
This is the hardest bit... If you are not a season
ticket holder it is difficult, if not impossible, to follow
Ajax 'on the road'. This has to do with limited ticket
allocations for travelling Ajax fans, but also with the
extremely exclusive system of 'away cards', only available to
season ticket holders.
In order to regulate fan travel to away games, Ajax
introduced a system of 'away cards' for season ticket holders
only. Season ticket holders can 'upgrade' their season ticket
to an 'away card'. There is no additional cost for this, but
supporters have to visit the Ajax Supporters Desk for it, in
order to have a digital photograph taken for ID
purposes.
If a fan visits more than ten away games in one season, his
away card automatically becomes a so-called 'priority away
card'. The number of 'priority away cards' issued is based on
the smallest away end in the Eredivisie.
When the allocated tickets for Ajax fans go on sale,
'priority away card holders' go first, followed by holders of a
regular away card. In most cases the entire ticket allocation
for Ajax fans is sold out after that. Even if the section
doesn't sell out, non-Club Card-holders usually don't get the
chance to buy tickets, as a home game against Ajax is a 'high
risk' event for the hosts. Therefore, safety measures and
presale procedures for Ajax fans are strict.
The only real exceptions to this rule are pre-season
friendlies. Prior to the start of the Dutch league, Ajax play a
string of friendly games - usually away - at Dutch amateur,
First Division and sometimes Eredivisie or international
opponents. In most cases, a limited number of tickets is for
sale at the ticket counter inside the Ajax Fanshop at the
Amsterdam ArenA. Because of the friendly nature of these games,
a Club Card is not required in some cases. Pick your game
and call the Supporters Helpdesk at the ArenA to learn whether
tickets are sold to non-Club Card-holders: (+31-20) 311-1444
(for English press 1).
GENERAL WARNING about Ajax away games:
Although violent escalations are not nearly as common
as some people may tell you, you should note that Ajax
fans travelling to away games should bring ID and are subject
to search by (riot) police. Ajax fans and fans of the home team
are strictly and - in 99.9% of the cases - succesfully
separated inside the stadium, but fanatical fans of the home
team may be provocative and hostile towards visiting fans.
Also, many of the Ajax fans travelling to away games are
fanatical and particularly passionate about their club. Being a
fellow Ajax fan you will be regarded as 'one of them', but your
fellow fans are likely to be verbally abusive (for example
in Dutch and English language chants) and fierce in
their reactions.
