Impossible to get tickets
... but desperate to go…?
Despite our excellent personal experience with the Ajax Supporters Desk and Ajax Travel, it is possible that they do not offer the game of your choice, or cannot help you because your game is sold out. If you're still desperate to go to the game of your choice, there are alternative options.
The first one is, simply, to go to the stadium on match day and look out for unlicensed, individual ticket sellers, also known as touts or scalpers. However, and this is an important notice, we do not recommend this way of purchasing tickets, since it's prohibited by Dutch law. Police patrol the ArenA grounds prior to big games. People caught selling and buying tickets illegally face considerable fines. Also, compared to Italy or England the number of scalpers outside of football stadiums is rather small in The Netherlands. You might not even bump into one in the first place.
The second option is to check out Dutch auction websites such as the Dutch version of eBay or Marktplaats.nl (a similar auction site, albeit one where auctions do not have a time limit, sellers are free to not sell their stuff to the highest bidder and bidders just have to wait and see whether or not a seller will accept their bid and contact them). Tickets to bigger Ajax home games are almost always on auction here (especially on Marktplaats), but you should note that you are dealing with individual sellers on these websites. The upside of this: you may get lucky and 'meet' a real Ajax fan who can't make it to the game and offers his set of tickets for face value. The downside: you may get ripped off.
The third option is to revert to an Amsterdam-based ticket agency (a broker or reseller) such as Budget Ticket or TicketUnlimited, who offer tickets for almost every Ajax home game. Be warned: TicketUnlimited's prices have increased very dramatically over the past couple of years, so you can expect to pay a huge mark-up, perhaps as much as 5x the face value of the ticket.
We can not formally endorse these companies, but we know Ticket Unlimited is a reliable business: they take phone or on line reservations, after which you make an appointment to collect your ticket(s) at their office in Amsterdam (which is a 5 minute walk from Amsterdam Central Station). You pay in person (cash only) and receive your ticket on the spot. You are not violating Dutch law by buying tickets from Ticket Unlimited in this fashion. However, you are paying more - much more - than face-value. Which is, in most cases, unnecessary: the number of Ajax games that actually sell out completely is not nearly as high as the average Amsterdammer seems to believe. Always check the 'official' options first before giving a ticket agency a call.
One thing to note: These businesses are not appreciated by Ajax, who consider such brokerages 'technically' legal but 'morally' questionable.
In all cases, we recommend you visit our Tickets to Ajax Games discussion thread forum before departing for Amsterdam.
