Eredivisie: Ajax win 4-1 to keep pace with PSV
06 April: Ajax have re-discovered their goal-scoring touch, albeit too late to win them a championship. Eight goals in the past two games, including a hat-trick from an on-form Klaas-Jan Huntelaar today, made victory easy for Ajax. The trophy is still PSV's to lose, however, after they managed a lackluster 2-0 victory over Heracles Almelo in Eindhoven. PSV would need to drop five points in their final two games. That seems like pure Ajax fantasy at this point. Match report coming soon | Discuss
Eredivisie: Lifeline? Ajax win 2-4 at Heerenveen while PSV drops points
30 March: Perhaps the most exasperating thing about this roller-coaster season is how it continues to encourage Ajax fans to hope. More than once, we've collectively declared the title race to be over, only to be given pause by a weekend's results. It's happened once again. While Ajax were crafting a 2-4 victory at SC Heerenveen, PSV were (not altogether surprisingly) dropping points at NAC Breda (0-0). There's a difference between hope and chances, however, and Ajax still face an unlikely uphill climb if they are to catch the reigning champions. Match report coming soon | Discuss
Eredivisie: Ajax can prepare for play-offs after 2-1 defeat at Twente
23 March: The flickering flame of Ajax's title hopes was blown out by FC Twente today. In Enschede, Ajax took the lead in a very fortunate way (own goal from Douglas, 63'), but Luke Wilkshire equalized only seven minutes later. Referee Van Hulten could (or perhaps should) have awarded a penalty to Luis Suárez, but an Ajax win would have been undeserved. Elia's winning goal, after two minutes of stoppage time, definitely wasn't: 2-1 - and game over. Match report coming soon | Discuss
Eredivisie: PSV and Ajax share points in tense stalemate: 0-0
19 March: With the Eredivisie championship on the line, Ajax and PSV defended resolutely while attacking only on rare occasions. The result, 0-0, was probably more disappointing to the visitors, who needed the points to reinvigorate their championship campaign. Indeed, Ajax were the clear aggressor, enjoying the vast majority of possession and coming closer to scoring on more occasions. But one point for each team seems an equitable result in this grim, intense contest. Gordon Paterson reports
Eredivisie: Suarez hat-trick leads Ajax comeback against Willem II: 4-1
16 March: Ajax could be excused for expecting an easy time at home today against relegation-candidates Willem II. But Frank Demouge's goal after 19 minutes added some drama to the affair. But... no worries. The home side eventually managed to right the ship. Huntelaar equalized in the 31st minute, and Suarez' impressive hat-trick secured the points comfortably for Ajax. Their day was complete when Roda JC managed a late equalizer against PSV, 1-1. Just four points now separate the top two clubs, who meet in Eindhoven on Wednesday night. Ian Walker reports
PSV - Ajax re-scheduled to Wednesday 19 March
13 March: The KNVB have found a new date for last weekend's vital fixture between PSV and Ajax. The match will now be played on Wednesday 19 March, kick-off at 20:45 CET. "We want this fixture to be played as soon as possible," a KNVB spokesman said. "This match cannot wait 'til the final weeks of the season." The choice was easy, in a way: with PSV still competing in the UEFA Cup and a Holland friendly coming up, Wednesday 19 March was pretty much the only option. Read
PSV vs Ajax (once again...) called off due to police strike
08 March: History has repeated itself: just like in the first half of the season (December 2007) the top Eredivisie clash between PSV and Ajax has been called off due to a police strike. Ajax decided to sue the police unions on Saturday, but the verdict of the judge was clear: the police have the right to go on strike. Read
Eredivisie: Ajax gain ground with convincing win over Excelsior: 4-0
02 March: Is it too late for Ajax to stage a run for the Eredivisie title? Probably. But today's results are surely a tonic for the Amsterdam club. In addition to their own 4-0 victory over Excelsior (revenge for their stunning 2-1 loss at Woudestein Stadium in December), league-leaders PSV lost 3-1 at FC Utrecht, and Feyenoord fell at home, 1-3, to NEC. It's just the second time this season, and first since November, that the Amsterdammers have managed to win three straight, and it puts them within six points of the top. But the title will only become a genuine possibility if Ajax can do the business at Philips Stadium next Sunday; the looming encounter with PSV now takes on monumental significance. Menno Pot reports
Eredivisie: Ajax come from behind to win at Breda: 2-3
23 February: At the end of such a monumental week, Ajax added a touch of drama and celebration by scoring two goals in the last 15 minutes at NAC Breda to win 2-3. The unlikely but suddenly prolific goal-scorer Johnny Heitinga nodded home the winner in the 82nd minute. Ian Walker reports
Marco Van Basten to coach Ajax
22 February: Marco van Basten has signed a four-year contract to become the head coach of Ajax, once his duties as head of Oranje are completed at Euro 2008. The former Ajax and AC Milan great will take over in Amsterdam in July, and will be joined by his current Oranje assistants John van’t Schip and Rob Witschge. Van Basten has previously coached Young Ajax for one season, in 2003-2004. Read
Stekelenburg pens contract renewal until 2012
21 February: Several foreign clubs, including Tottenham Hotspur, were interested, but Maarten Stekelenburg ain't going nowhere: the Ajax goalkeeper penned a contract renewal at the Amsterdam ArenA today, which will make him an Ajacied until 30 June 2012. His previous deal would have expired in the summer of 2010. "To me, this feels like the right choice," De Steek said. Read
SPECIAL REPORT: BOARD TO RESIGN; CRUIJFF TO RE-DESIGN AJAX
20 February: In November 2007, the board and Members’ Council of AFC Ajax decided to appoint an independent inquiry comittee for a thorough and critical analyses of the club’s policy of the past ten seasons. The committee, presided by former board member Uri Coronel, observed the club for three months, studied ten seasons of documentation and conducted 42 interviews with prominent club people. They presented their report, entitled Ajax, The Road To Victory on Friday 17 February. A one sentence summary: it’s time for major, major changes. Read
Blog: Ajax USA is back... but what did you miss? 26 January: So, Ajax USA is back, 100%. In the weeks before the site went down altogether, we had already begun experiencing a few brief periods of unavailability. And then, disaster... the site was completely unavailable for several weeks toward the end of 2007...
